DBA = $$$

Guess I'm becoming pretty valuable! I got a random call today at work. It was from one of my instructors on campus. He said that he was sitting with a Business Analyst from The LDS Church and they were looking for an intern to work with Database Admins (DBA). The instructor was saying that he quickly thought of me as one that would fill the role well and I could start next week.
Well that's quite a shock! I love having options!
I talked with the business analyst for a few minutes. I told him that I just finished up my internship with at the Church. He knew of my boss. But being that I'd have to drop all of my classes for the semester and then move back to Salt Lake area it isn't the best option. Besides, I'm sure that if suggested to Melissa that we live for 4 months apart again that I'd always have to watch my back. She would probably attack me. I'd have to sleep in another room. I'd never see her coming if I was asleep. She admitted to hitting me in the face often while I sleep... she blames it on me though: "We have a king bed, you don't need to be sleeping so close to me!"

Anyways, I turned it down. But I did some quick researching to find out what DBA's make as a starting salary. I found out a typical range would be to take your age and multiply by 2 or 3 (2 if you have no degree and less than 10 years experience).
I'd have a degree... but not quite the experience. My teacher for database 1 said that after 1 semester of that class, we have the experience of someone doing it full-time for 3 years... So maybe I'd fall in the 2.5 multiplier range. So $65,000 isn't bad for a starting salary at Oracle. But for right now, my skills are seriously lacking for DBA stuff. But it's fun & challenging.

Happy Halloween!

I wanted to do a quick Halloween post so I won't ever forget how adorable Channing was.  He was a scarecrow this Halloween.  We used a pair of his overalls and I sewed on a few patches of material and then we stuffed his pockets with straw.  The paint on the nose thing didn't work so well...he rubbed it off the first time around.  Our ward did a trunk-or-treat in the parking lot.  Channing was a little skeptical about it all when we first started.  But he quickly got the hang of walking up to people, grabbing candy, and putting it in his bucket.  Someone gave him a sucker and he immediately had to have it!  At least he's easy to please!  Such a friendly scarecrow...had to say bye to the trick-or-treaters as they left.

My reality check

Remember how in my last few posts I talked about how we were teaching Channing to put himself back to sleep by letting him cry it out?  Since Channing has been sick for over a week that has all gone down the drain....  The poor kid is so congested all the time.  When we wakes up at night he usually will not take his binky and fall back asleep.  Instead he needs his nose suctioned, which usually requires Justin holding Channing's head still or it's impossible.  And lately he will not go back to sleep at all until he's fed again.  Last night it was every 3 hours.  I don't know if it's because his throat hurts or he just wants to be held.  Whatever the reason, nights have been a little rough around here.  Oh, and his naps during the day have been pretty bad.  Crying a lot before falling asleep and then only sleeping for 20 or 30 minutes.  Motherhood is definitely a 24/7 job.  With no lunch breaks.  And get this!  Channin...

60 Things I Love About My Mom

In honor of my mom turning 60 years old on February 5th I have written 60 things that I love about her. 1. My mom lives the gospel. 2. She taught me how to follow the prophet. 3. My mom loves to travel. 4. With each baby I had she took the time to be there.  And then stayed for at least a week following the birth to help me at home.  She even brought be breakfast in bed. 5. My mom always fulfills her calling.  I remember when she was Relief Society President she was gone on my 15th birthday at an Enrichment meeting.  I was a bit peeved about it.  But now when I think about it I am inspired by her ability to 100% fulfill her calling and show up for her fellow RS sisters. 6. She taught me how to cook.  We always had a vegetable on the plate. 7. She thoroughly adores her grandkids. 8. My mom can do hard things. 9. My mom is a RN which is no easy job.  I know her job is often stressful.  She's an amazing labor and delivery nurs...
